The Metal Signs That Outlasted My First Marriage

And probably my next emotionally unavailable situationship

Some things just aren’t built to last. Like a couples pottery class. Or that time you thought you could “make it work” with someone who referred to brunch as a personality trait. But then there are the real survivors — the ones that don’t ghost, warp, or suddenly decide they need “space.”

We’re talking about metal signs. Embossed. Licensed. Emotionally sturdier than your last situationship. These are the ride-or-dies of home décor — the unsung heroes of your wall, quietly surviving your most dramatic life chapters while looking effortlessly cool.

Let’s highlight a few of those and give them the credit they deserve.

1. Vespa – Iconic Since 1946

Survived: Three moves, two dogs, and one unfortunate mustache that never should’ve happened.

This sign came into my life during the “we’re cultured and definitely going to Italy this year” phase of my first real adult relationship. Spoiler: we went to IKEA instead. But the Vespa? She stayed. She looked damn good next to a stack of unread cookbooks and a half-empty bottle of limoncello that got more action than we did.

It was our centerpiece — a nod to carefree summers we never had and espresso breaks that only ever happened in our heads. And even as the relationship went the way of our sourdough starter (read: bloated, neglected, eventually tossed), the Vespa stayed. Elegant. Loyal. Undented by drama.

It’s more than a scooter. It’s an artifact of optimism and mildly delusional travel plans.

2. Daimler Truck – UNIMOG

Survived: My off-grid fantasy, a beard I couldn’t pull off, and a borderline unhealthy obsession with cast iron skillets.

This sign marked the beginning of what I can only describe as my “aspirational man-in-the-woods” era. You know the type: drinks black coffee, owns a multitool, talks about chopping firewood like it's therapy. None of which I actually did. But the UNIMOG made it feel possible.

I put it up right above my desk — which is where I sat googling “how to be more rugged” while eating leftover pad thai. And somehow, it gave me a weird kind of confidence. Not in a toxic, alpha-energy way. More like, “I could probably survive one night in a cabin if there’s cell service and snacks.”

This thing is the emotional support truck of midlife reinvention. And I mean that in the best way.

3. BMW – Make Life an Adventure

Survived: One solo trip, five accidental detours, and a year of saying “yes” when I should’ve said “let me get back to you.”

This sign was a post-breakup gift to myself. A bold declaration that I was ready for new roads, new beginnings, and maybe a motorcycle phase (that never actually happened — helmets are expensive). It stared down from my wall like a motivational speaker with really great posture.

Even when I wasn’t feeling brave — even when my biggest adventure was trying a new laundry detergent — this sign said, “You’ve got this.” No judgment. Just handlebars and hope. And isn’t that all any of us really want? A little encouragement to keep moving, even if we’re not quite sure where the hell we’re going.

It doesn’t just decorate a room. It dares you to get off the couch and remember you have legs.

Why Metal Signs Deserve a Spot in Your Inner Circle

Here’s the deal: these signs aren’t just wall candy. They’re steel-bound reminders of the person you were, the person you’re becoming, and the beautifully messy in-between. They don’t fade. They don’t flake. They don’t suddenly text you “u up?” at 2AM after six months of silence.

They are at your side. Every damn day. Unbothered. Undented. Looking sharp while your personal growth wobbles around like a baby deer on rollerblades.

So go ahead — hang one. Or three. Let them witness your next reinvention, your next awkward dinner party, your next solo Saturday spent dancing in the kitchen like nobody’s watching (except the dog, who is very much judging you).

Because in a world of short attention spans and flimsier loyalties, a good metal sign is the kind of forever we can actually believe in.

Add to cart. Add to wall. Add to your story.
